I hit my hand with a hammer…

Every action produces a result.

If we do not like the result, then we need to change the activity.

For example:

I hit my hand with a hammer.

Ouch. That hurts.

Then I do it again.

Ouch. Ouch. That really hurts.

I repeat the action.

Ouch. Ouch.

By now, the lesson is obvious.

Hitting my hand with a hammer consistently makes my hand hurt.

So if I want a different result, I need to do something different.

Perhaps I should have a cup of tea instead of hitting my hand with a hammer.

This feels like common sense, yet consider this.

Today, I get into my car and commute two hours to an appointment.

I only get paid if the client says yes. They say no. No income,

no client, and I hate every minute of the rejection.

Tomorrow, I get into my car and commute two hours to another appointment. I only get paid if the client says yes. They say no.

No income, no client, and I hate every minute of the rejection.

Same activity. Same results.

Now, imagine you come along and offer me a chance to change my activity. You suggest coaching on skills so I can reduce the rejection I dislike so much.

If I refuse to listen, and you have compassion for my insanity, you might tell me the story about the hammer and the hand.

With luck, I might say, “You are right. Things will not change unless

I change what I am doing. Let’s move forward.”

This applies to our business too.

If we are unhappy with our income, we need to change our activity.

If what we say and do today produces small fees, then it is time

to change our words and our actions.

Opening sentence ideas

“My friend has just taken on six new clients. Would you like to know how he did it?”
“Do you hate rejection as much as I do?”
“Do you enjoy coffee breaks and chatting? What if we could earn a living by having five coffee breaks a day?”
“Do you dislike taking risks? I decided not to put all my income in the hands of the bank. Would you like to know what I did?”

People enjoy interesting conversations. They also enjoy being asked questions because it gives them the chance to talk. And people love talking about themselves.

Better than a savings account

If we learn something new today, we can use that knowledge every day for the rest of our lives. Skills pay off every month, forever.

Change our careers, fast

If we already have this book, it is worth reading again. Books often make more sense the second time. We see the same ideas from a new perspective. The book is Getting Yes Decisions, without rejection.

Available as an e-book, paperback and audio.

Change is often just a book away.

I love this question.

“So what is going to be easier for you? Continuing to struggle with your current skills, or working with me so you have the chance to double your income in the next quarter?”

Humour

I’ve learnt a lot from my mistakes. I’m thinking of making a few more.

I tried to change my habits — but they recognised me straight away.

Experience is something you get just after you needed it.

I finally understood why nothing changes… I keep doing the same thing very efficiently.

I’m not stuck in my ways, I just know exactly where they lead.
