The 5-Second Rule for Prospecting

Win a prospect’s attention in 5 seconds

Attention spans are shrinking, so we have to make every second count.

The 5-second strategy

Prospects decide quickly whether to keep listening. Here’s how to hook them:

  1. Start with a question. “What’s the one thing you’d change about your current situation?”
  2. Share a bold statement. “Did you know 70% of people could improve this in just one step?”
  3. Give them a reason to care. “This could save you time, money, or stress starting now.”

Why this works

It’s not just about what we say—it’s about how we make prospects feel in those first moments.

Humour

My 5-second rule for snacks: If I drop one, it’s still good. My 5-second rule for prospecting? No crumbs allowed.

I told a prospect I could hook them in 5 seconds. They replied, “You’ve got 3 left.”

The only thing faster than my prospecting pitch is my coffee disappearing in the morning.
