Turn strangers into connections in 3 steps
Every prospect starts as a stranger. Here’s how to bridge that gap.
Step 1: Warm up the conversation
Start with a simple observation or compliment. Example: “That’s an interesting [detail about them]. What’s the story behind it?”
Step 2: Ask about their priorities
“What’s the most important thing you’re focusing on this year?” This question shifts the focus to what matters to them.
Step 3: Offer a small value upfront
A quick tip, resource, or insight shows you’re genuinely here to help.
Story: From zero to rapport in minutes
I once cold-called a prospect and started with, “I noticed you recently published an article on [their topic]. Great insights—what inspired it?” They opened up, and by the end of the call, they wanted to hear more about what I offered.
Humour
I tried turning a stranger into a connection once. Turns out, they were still a stranger afterward.
Why don’t strangers trust me? Because I keep telling these terrible jokes.
My best way to connect with strangers? Free coffee. Works every time.
