Opening phrase cringe …

We get judged quickly. Unfair, but reality.

If we use these opening phrases, it might be time to rethink how we start conversations online.

  • Hi, I love connecting with like-minded individuals ...
  • I noticed we're both passionate about ...
  • I see that we share an interest in ...
  • It's great to connect with fellow ...

Do we feel the dreaded "salesperson alarm" ringing?

Instead of using these worn, generic openings, let’s personalize our messages. Yes, be human. Not a cut ‘n paste robot.

And the difference? More honest engagements and better results.

The purpose of business is to solve our prospects' problems.

How can we tactfully ask our prospects about their problems?

Well, it may differ according to your locality, where the conversation happens, and how personal the problems are. Here are some opening phrases that can give us some ideas:

  • All businesses have problems, of course. What do you think are the most pressing problems our businesses face?
  • What's a regular challenge that you notice?
  • What's the latest obstacle that you had to face?
  • What's the most frustrating thing you have to deal with?
  • Are there any improvements you would like to see?

Most prospects love talking about themselves and their problems. All we have to do is listen.

Can we say this better?

Untrained talk: "This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity."

Improved version: "I believe this would make a big difference in your life, especially in your situation."

Untrained talk: "Our product is the best on the market."

Improved version: "Based on what you told me, I think this product will be the best solution to fix the problem."

Untrained talk: "This product will solve all your problems."

Improved version: "While our product isn't a magic solution for everything under the sun, it has helped so many people with a similar situation."

Untrained talk: "You're going to make a bunch of money if you join."

Improved version: "With the right effort, I'm confident that with my help, you will earn a lot of money."

We want to improve how we talk to our prospects to give them more confidence to move forward.
